INTERNATIONAL
EXPANSION

Time to go full throttle - Europe? The whole world? Absolutely, we are going in with you.

Do you have a plan for
INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION?

With Shopify, we'll open the door to growth that simply isn't possible on local platforms. Take the decisive step forward into international markets and global e-commerce.

You'll get one global platform built from the ground up for international selling - enabling multiple currencies, languages, and localised customer experiences.

On one platform you'll connect online sales across countries including B2B and physical stores via Shopify POS. Shopify isn't just an e-commerce system, but a complete commerce ecosystem that - thanks to built-in AI - helps with content localisation, performance optimisation and automation of expansion processes. On top of that, the platform evolves every six months with hundreds of new features from a global community of more than 4,000 Shopify developers, so your store is built for long-term growth beyond the home market.

Let's expand

What does expansion with Shopify bring you?

Shopify Sidekick

AI right in your store

Sidekick is an AI assistant integrated into the store admin that significantly speeds up your work in Shopify. It can handle operational tasks (create products, edit collections, analyse sales, prepare reports), help with marketing (writing descriptions, emails, SEO recommendations), propose and apply storefront changes including design modifications or edit the theme - including generating Liquid code. Sidekick can explain how settings in the admin work, recommend steps for store growth, automate processes and suggest best practices. Answers are personalised based on your store's sales, customers and specific configuration.

A powerful "admin"

We won't sugarcoat it - building a store takes work, and even then the road to success is not easy. So you will spend a lot of time in the "admin". And it helps when it is clear and keeps up with you. The Shopify admin has it all: analytics, hints, AI that sees your data and can even advise based on general experience from elsewhere. And that is just the beginning.

Built for international selling

Markets in Shopify handles local currency, payment methods and languages. Additional features help you give global customers a familiar shopping environment that demonstrably increases conversions. You can tune the theme, content, product selection and pricing per market. With Shop Pay you can offer their preferred payment methods and even adapt address formats to local conventions.

Sophisticated benchmarking against others

Shopify shows you via AI and built-in benchmarks how similar stores around the world are performing. So you can measure your performance more accurately and use the information to your advantage.

Multichannel marketing

Organise your marketing activities clearly across email, social media, advertising and organic traffic into cohesive campaigns. Clear per-channel reports help you better understand where customers come from, how much it costs to acquire them and what the return on your marketing investment is.

B2B ready

In Shopify Plus you will find native B2B functionality designed for companies with high order volume, complex pricing and individual business relationships. It enables working with company accounts, custom price lists, approval processes and recurring purchases in one unified solution.

Want a smaller B2B solution? That is handled by an app or custom development.

B2B ready

Automation

With growing order volumes, manual management stops making sense. Automation lets you move key processes - from order and customer management through pricing and inventory to marketing scenarios - into controlled, predictable flows.

The result is less dependence on manual intervention, lower error rates and the ability to scale without constantly growing the team.

Automation

You are in the right place!

When it comes to global expansion, the question is not whether - but when. Shopify gives you the technological foundation so you can focus on growth instead of working around platform limitations. Is now the right time, and do you want to take your store further with us?

International expansion - frequently asked questions

Should I build a separate store for each country?

Almost never. Shopify Markets handles currencies, languages, pricing, domains and tax rules from a single admin - separate stores only make sense with a fundamentally different range, or to separate B2B from B2C.

Two stores mean double the work on products, content and orders. It's the most expensive mistake we see in expansion, and it only shows up a year later.

Domain, subfolder or subdomain?

For most brands starting out, the pragmatic choice is a subfolder - it consolidates SEO authority on one domain and Shopify generates hreflang for it automatically.

A dedicated domain per market makes sense once the brand holds a different position there, or where local trust demands it. Moving between the two is possible, but costs redirects and time.

How does VAT work when selling into the EU?

Selling to EU consumers above the €10,000 a year threshold, you register for OSS and pay VAT by the customer's country. Below the threshold you pay at home.

Shopify can calculate and collect VAT and provides the data for OSS filings. Registration and the filings themselves are your accountant's job - we set up the system, not the taxes.

Do I need the store translated into every language?

Not necessarily. English covers a large part of Europe and it's reasonable to start there, before you know which markets actually pull.

Translation pays off where you're already selling. Only then can you see whether it returns - which is also why we built our own app for bulk translation.

What about shipping and duties outside the EU?

Shopify can calculate duties and taxes at checkout, so the customer sees the final landed price rather than hearing it from the courier.

It's worth switching on. An unpleasant surprise on delivery is one of the main reasons parcels get refused when selling outside the EU.

When does expansion make sense?

When you're hitting a ceiling of demand at home, your product isn't tied to local context, and you can handle customer support in another language.

That last point is the most underestimated. Technically expansion is configuration; operationally it's a commitment to answer people writing in another language and another time zone.
